Homemade/Cooking vs. Store Bought/Eating Out

Take advantage of the things meant to make your life easier.

HOMEMADE CINNAMON ROLLS

VERSUS

STORE BOUGHT CINNAMON ROLLS
After my run I decided to make some cinnamon rolls that a friend (Nary) made. We always eat the store bought cinnamon rolls so making it from scratch would be delicious, right? Well....not for me! I don't know what I did wrong. Maybe I didn't let the yeast settle for the dough to rise long enough? Maybe because I used my hands to knead the dough instead of a mixer? Maybe because I stopped 10 times in the process to deal with the kids? Maybe because I improvised using a cup as my roller instead of a real one? Maybe because the recipe included coffee in the glaze and I improvised with water? Maybe because I didn't have the right sized pan and used a glass Pyrex? I really don't know. The dough came out crappy so I ended up tossing it. I'm sure they are great, just not my day!

Lesson learned - - sometimes store bought is really better than homemade.

Here's why:

Homemade/Cooking vs. Store Bought/Eating Out
  • Homemade/Cooking
    • pros
      • it usually tastes better and you know exactly what's in your food
      • you feel accomplished making something from scratch
      • you can honestly say you've cooked something vs. just pinning it to the other hundreds of recipes you've liked on Pinterest
      • You can involve your kids to "help out" or in Rachel's case, stirring the eggs
    • cons
      • It takes a lot of time. And honestly, who has enough time to take an hour or more to prep/cook/clean something that is consumed so fast?
      • it's messy - requires a messy kitchen counter and dishes to wash
      • Following a recipe doesn't always end up tasting the way it should
  • Store Bought/ Eating out
    • pros
      • when eating out, someone else can clean up after you
      • it's fast and convenient
      • you know what you're going to get
    •  cons
      • You may spend a little more eating out
      • You have to take your kids in public - - requires going potty before leaving, getting in the car, getting out of the car, going potty during your meal, entertaining your kid to stay still for 30 minutes, etc.
