The U.S. Mint Unveils Four New Lincoln Pennies

The United States Mint has unveiled four new designs for the circulating 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Coins. The reverse side of the new coins depict events in Lincoln's life. The four designs to be featured on the reverse of the Lincoln pennies represent four major aspects of President Lincoln's life: his birth and childhood in Kentucky, his formative years in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois and his Presidency in Washington, D.C. The picture on the right is an image of one of the new coins that shows Lincoln as a railsplitter. The inscriptions on the reverse of the coins will be "United States of America," "E Pluribus Unum" and "One Cent." The obverse or heads side of the pennies coins will continue to bear Victor David Brenner's likeness of President Lincoln and the motto "In God We Trust." The new designs will be issued in approximately three-month intervals throughout the year. The first redesigned penny, which will honor Lincoln's birth and early childhood, will be put into circulation on February 12, 2009. In the video below, Katie Couric notes the irony in that the U.S. Mint is revealing a new penny while at the same time the Fed is plotting a $800 billion bailout plan to save the country's financial system.
